Sport Pedagogy

What can movement, play and sport achieve for the individual and for society? How can educational processes succeed in this context? To answer such questions, an understanding of conditions, actions and groups of people is essential. Our research and teaching involve critical reflection on the level of rationale as well as empirical investigation of the effects of educational practice.

„A diverse culture of sport and movement offers occasions and contains numerous potentials for educational processes (e.g. promotion of self-determination and teamwork). In sports education, we ask how mediators of movement, play and sport can support the personal development and social education of young people in an increasingly complex and uncertain world.“

Prof. Dr. Christian Gaum, head of sport pedagogy and sport didactics

Which images and concepts of the body underlie the various practical areas of sport and what role do they play within the (sport) pedagogical contexts? The teaching and research area of sport pedagogy and didactics focuses on these questions.

The courses offered by this department highlight the potential of movement, game and sport in school and extracurricular fields of practice with regard to diversity, justice, equal opportunities and empowerment. They follow the principle of research-based learning.
